Step Inside the Story - Explorations into Art and Culture
Offering you an opportunity to get "inside the story" of world famous art and culture
Our programs are detailed explorations into a particular artistic genre or
movement aimed at satisfying the curiosity of those who want to develop or enhance their appreciation of the creative mind at work.
INSIDE THE STORY is a unique venture where culture-loving people meet for programs and lectures in a wide range of exciting and thought-provoking subjects. It was conceived by two sisters -- Susan Cherney, a former CPA, and Wendy Moss, a retired attorney – with a love of learning and a passion for the arts, who found that there were few opportunities for them to continue to expand their knowledge and appreciation of these things and decided to do something about it.
In 2010, these enterprising women reached out to some of Los Angeles’ most celebrated figures in the world of literature, visual arts, film and popular culture to present them to a small, like-minded audience. Many of the programs are held in a private home in Pasadena, Calif., where both Susan and Wendy reside, with others taking place in museums, art galleries and artist studios. Each outing is held with an expert on the topic, exhibit or the artists themselves on hand to discuss the interesting and varied aspects of the subject being explored. Audiences are kept intentionally small, with most limited to 15-20 participants, and all are invited to ask questions and be a part of a stimulating discussion. The result is a vibrant community of life-long learners, whose connection to Southern California’s cultural and intellectual works has been enlarged and enriched.
Past events have included: The Art of Conducting with LA Music Critic Mark Swed, The Music of the Beatles with USC musicologist Carlos Rivera, art seminars on Willem DeKooning, Magritte and Surrealists, the Masters of Venetian painting with artist/scholar Tom Wudl, Love in Art and Degas in Los Angeles with art historian and former Getty curator Charlotte Eyerman and Mark Twain with UCLA professor Charles Lynn Batten. David Ulin has conducted series on the Art of the Short Story I and II, the Art of the Essay I and II, Maus, The Counterlife, the Book of Daniel and Mildred Pierce. INSIDE THE STORY’S visual arts programs have included in-depth tours by art historians and curators of most of the special exhibits in Los Angeles museums and galleries.
